There was something truly magical about seeing residents from Gedling Village Care Home enjoying an evening at Nottingham’s famous Goose Fair. As the bright lights twinkled, the music filled the air and the scent of fairground food drifted through the crowds, it was impossible not to be swept up in the excitement of a tradition that has been bringing people together for generations.
The evening was packed with smiles, laughter and a little friendly competition as residents tried their luck on the side stall games. There were cheers for every win and plenty of good-natured teasing along the way. Of course, no trip to Goose Fair would be complete without indulging in some of the classic treats. Mushy peas with mint sauce brought back memories of fairs gone by, while others happily tucked into hot dogs as they soaked up every moment of the atmosphere.

One of the most touching moments of the evening came as residents watched the giant Ferris wheel slowly turning against the night sky. For some, it stirred memories of childhood trips, family outings and evenings spent at the fair many years ago. You could see those memories shining in their eyes. But what made the moment even more special was that it wasn’t just about looking back. It was about looking forward too.
At Gedling Village Care Home, we believe that life should continue to be filled with adventure, excitement and meaningful experiences. Too often, older age can be viewed through the lens of what people can no longer do. We prefer to focus on everything that is still possible. Seeing residents laughing at the fair, trying new foods, playing games and taking in the sights was a powerful reminder that there is still so much left to enjoy, experience and discover.

Trips like these are about so much more than an evening out. They reconnect people with cherished memories, spark new conversations and remind us all that life’s most meaningful moments are often found outside of our comfort zones. The smiles as the Ferris wheel turned were filled with nostalgia, but they were also filled with excitement for what comes next.
Because at Gedling Village Care Home, we don’t believe life should become smaller with age. We believe it should continue to be lived, embraced and celebrated. Our residents are not defined by the years behind them, but by the opportunities still ahead of them. There are still places to visit, experiences to enjoy, friendships to nurture and memories waiting to be made. Our ambition is not simply to provide care and protection, but to help people continue writing new chapters of their story. As the lights of Goose Fair faded into the distance, one thing was clear: there is still plenty of life to live, and we intend to help our residents make the very most of it.
