Get to know Laura O’Brien, our Care Home Manager here at Gilling Reane…

Hi Laura, can you tell us a little about your background in care?

Care has been my world for around 25 years and I’ve had the privilege of being a care home manager for the past nine. Along the way, I’ve also worked as a trainer for care staff and as a social worker, which has really shaped the way I lead and support my team. I’ve been with Pearlcare for nearly two years now, after returning to the UK following 30 wonderful years in Sweden.

What qualifications and experience do you bring to Gilling Reane?

I hold a UK degree in Health and Social Care, along with diplomas in Palliative Care and Dementia Care. I’m also a former SEN practitioner, IOSH certified and a trained bereavement counsellor. Most importantly, though, I bring real‑life experience, compassion and a deep understanding of what truly matters to people.

How would you describe your passion for care?

I bring commitment, drive, passion and fun! I truly believe that care should feel safe, joyful and homely, not only for the people who live here, but for the team who work here too. When we support and uplift our staff, excellence naturally follows and that’s exactly what we strive for every single day.

What kind of atmosphere do you create at Gilling Reane?

Gilling Reane is a warm, welcoming and genuinely homely place. We accept people for exactly who they are, creating an open, friendly environment where everyone belongs. We even welcome pets, which bring huge emotional comfort. And yes, I love animals just as much as our residents do!

How do residents spend their time here?

Life here is shaped around what our residents enjoy most. That might mean pub afternoons, enjoying nature, karaoke, visits from animals, or simply relaxed one‑to‑one time. Our beautiful garden offers a real sense of freedom, peace and space to enjoy the outdoors.

How do families and friends fit into life at the home?

Family and friends are a huge part of our home. We actively encourage loved ones to be involved, helping to create a true community feel. There’s always laughter, conversation and plenty of banter. Residents’ wishes are listened to and respected, which makes this place feel truly special.

Gilling Reane clearly means a lot to you — why would you choose it for your own family?

Because in times of joy and in times of need, we offer genuine care, comfort and compassion. The ethos here; the teamwork, the freedom, the fun and the family feel is something I believe in wholeheartedly. It’s that sense of togetherness, between residents, staff, families and friends, that makes Gilling Reane a place like no other.
