Get to know Laura, our Care Home Manager here at Wellfield…
Who are you?!
I’m Laura Blythe, and I became the Registered Manager at Wellfield Care Home in February 2025. Still fairly new… but very much at home already.
So that’s quite recent, what were you doing before that?
Pull up a chair! I’ve been working in the care sector for over 25 years. I started nurse training back in 2000, qualified as a Mental Health Nurse in 2003, and spent over 13 years working in mental health services.
I also managed an independent hospital supporting adults with acute mental health needs. In 2015, I made the move into elderly nursing and care homes… and I’ve never looked back. Best decision I ever made!
25 years! You must really like what you do..
I absolutely do, and I feel very lucky to say that. My passion is making sure every resident receives not just excellent care, but care that’s truly person‑centred and individual.
We focus on enabling residents to live as independently as possible, while keeping them safe, happy and enjoying the best possible quality of life. Every day matters.
That sounds lovely. How do you welcome new residents, while keeping everyone happy and engaged?
Moving into a care home should be something positive — not frightening or nerve inducing.
We work hard to make the move as smooth and comfortable as possible. We encourage residents to continue with their hobbies and interests and do our very best to facilitate those.
Furthermore, we also love seeing new friendships blossom, it’s one of the best parts of the job. Moving into a care home is a huge life change, so we want it to be an enjoyable one. Family involvement is incredibly important to us too and we actively encourage families to be involved in their loved one’s care.
What makes Wellfield stand out? Why would you choose it?
I run everything through what I call “the mum test.”
Basically: “Would this be good enough for my mum?”
If the answer is no, we look at what needs improving. If the answer is yes , then brilliant! But we still ask, “What else can we do to make it even better?”
That mindset guides everything we do here.
Love that ethos! Lastly, what do you enjoy outside of work?
When I’m not at the home, I love slowing things down and enjoying the simple things. You’ll often find me in the garden, hands a bit muddy, tending plants & shrubs. I find it very therapeutic.
I also love getting outdoors on long walks with my two dogs. They keep me active, entertained and smiling (and definitely set the walking pace!). Fresh air, wagging tails and a bit of sunshine is my perfect way to unwind.
