At Hollybank Care Home, some of the most meaningful moments don’t happen on special occasions. They happen every week, with coats buttoned up, umbrellas at the ready, and a group of excited residents setting off on a familiar walk to one of their favourite places, Ye Old Fighting Cocks in Arnside.
This week’s trip was a perfect example of why these outings matter so much. The weather certainly wasn’t on our side, with heavy rain accompanying us for much of the journey, but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. In fact, it only highlighted something we have always believed: when something brings genuine joy, excitement and purpose, it is always worth making the effort. As the photographs show, the smiles, laughter and conversations waiting at the end of the walk made every raindrop worthwhile.

Situated right on Arnside’s beautiful seafront, Ye Old Fighting Cocks offers much more than coffee and cake, although the delicious cakes are certainly a highlight. It is a place where residents can sit together, watch the world go by, meet new people, and enjoy the simple pleasures that many of us take for granted. Choosing a favourite drink, deciding which cake looks too tempting to resist, chatting with friends and engaging with the local community are all ordinary experiences. Yet for people living in a care home, these ordinary moments can be extraordinarily important.
While the journey itself is not far in distance, it represents something far bigger. It is a chance for residents to enjoy a change of scenery, experience different surroundings, and step away from the routines of daily life. A new environment stimulates the senses, sparks conversation, creates memories and provides something to anticipate each week. These outings nourish the soul, offering freedom, independence and a continued connection to the surrounding community.

At Hollybank, we know that providing excellent care is non-negotiable. Every resident deserves compassion, dignity and support, and those foundations will always come first. But we also believe that great care is about so much more than meeting essential needs. It is about helping people continue to live meaningful, fulfilling lives. It is about encouraging choice, preserving independence, and ensuring residents can still enjoy the everyday experiences that make life rich and enjoyable.
That is what makes Hollybank special. We don’t believe in simply ticking boxes and being satisfied that the basics have been met. We believe in creating opportunities, supporting ambitions, encouraging friendships and making sure our residents continue to be active participants in life. Whether that means braving the rain for a coffee by the sea, choosing a favourite slice of cake, or sharing stories with friends old and new, these moments matter.
Because care isn’t just about helping people live safely.
It’s about helping them live well.
