There was plenty to celebrate at Athorpe Lodge Care Home recently after the home was named Care Home Hydration Winner for July 2026 in the local hydration project, which is led by the NHS hydration team. The award recognises the dedication, enthusiasm and creativity shown by the team in helping residents stay hydrated, particularly during the crazy hot summer months.
The recognition came after an impressive month of hydration-focused activities, with the NHS hydration team praising the home’s efforts and the positive impact they were having on residents. In the award announcement, the team highlighted how Athorpe Lodge had “really pushed the boat out” and encouraged hydration with enthusiasm and creativity.
One of the most heartwarming parts of the recognition came from feedback received by a member of the NHS care homes team during a visit. They reported hearing all about Athorpe Lodge’s hydration project and commented on the passion shown by the team:
“They were really enthusiastic and I could see how this was spilling over to the staff on the unit. I overheard a resident saying ‘it’s really refreshing’ – it was Tutti Frutti Tuesday! This is really great to hear.”
The feedback reflects the positive atmosphere created by staff, who have embraced hydration in a fun and engaging way while helping residents maintain their health and wellbeing. The project demonstrates how small daily initiatives can make a big difference, particularly during periods of warmer weather when hydration becomes even more important.
The award was further reinforced by congratulations from Katherine South, Care Home Hydration Project Lead, who praised the team’s efforts and said she had been “so impressed” by the work carried out throughout July.
