This Remembrance Day, Athorpe Lodge Care Home will come together for a very special afternoon of remembrance, love and acknowledgement, ensuring that the experiences and sacrifices of generations past are never forgotten.
On 11 November 2026 at 3:30pm, the home will host a 1940s-style afternoon tea, giving residents and the team an opportunity to pause, reflect and remember all those whose lives were touched by war.
The idea has come directly from conversations with residents. Some spoke about having served through National Service, while others shared memories of relatives who lived through or lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. For others, memories have been passed down through the stories of parents, grandparents and loved ones.
Listening to those conversations made it clear just how important it was to residents that Athorpe Lodge marked Remembrance Day in a meaningful way.
Remembering the Stories Behind the History
Remembrance Day is about more than remembering events in history. It is about remembering people.
It is an opportunity to honour those who served, while also acknowledging the families and communities whose lives were forever changed by conflict. For generations who lived through wartime, these events can be connected to very personal memories of loved ones, separation, loss, resilience and extraordinary courage.
For younger generations, the stories handed down by parents, grandparents and great-grandparents help ensure those experiences are not forgotten.
By bringing residents together over a 1940s-inspired afternoon tea, Athorpe Lodge hopes to create a thoughtful setting where memories can be shared, loved ones remembered and everyone can take a moment to reflect on what Remembrance Day means to them personally.
This will be the first time Athorpe Lodge has marked the occasion in this way, and it is hoped that the event will become something the home continues in future years.
Above all, the afternoon will be about coming together with respect and gratitude, recognising those who served, those who lived through wartime, those who lost loved ones and those who continue to keep their stories and memories alive.
We will remember them.
