At Gedling Village Care Home, care will always begin with the essentials. Making sure residents are safe, comfortable, well-fed, supported and cared for is the foundation of everything we do. But truly exceptional care doesn’t stop there.
Once those needs are met, the question becomes: what can we do today to make someone smile? What can we do to give them something to look forward to? What can we do to help them feel that today matters?
That’s where moments like our recent loom knitting session with Dawn become so important.
For Elaine, it was an opportunity to try something completely new. Using one of the larger looms, she threw herself into the challenge and did wonderfully, proving that it’s never too late to learn a new skill. Rita decided loom knitting wasn’t really for her, but she still stayed and spent time chatting, laughing and enjoying the surrounding company.

In many ways, that’s the real intangible success of an activity.
It isn’t always about what is made. It isn’t about finishing a hat, a bag or a Halloween decoration. It’s about what happens while people are creating. The conversations that begin. The memories that surface. The stories that are shared. The friendships that grow.
A ball of wool can spark memories of knitting jumpers for children, making gifts for loved ones, or evenings spent crafting years ago. Hands become busy, minds become stimulated, and residents connect with one another through shared experiences and treasured memories.
The room was full of those moments as Sheena proudly finished her latest hat before starting work on an adorable green ghost for Halloween. Meanwhile, Chris continued making fantastic progress with her bag, showing patience, determination and creativity every step of the way.
To an outsider, they may simply look like craft projects.
But to us, they represent something much more meaningful.
They represent purpose.
Having a reason to get up in the morning. Having something to work towards. Having a goal, however big or small. The excitement of showing friends your progress. The pride of finishing something with your own hands. The feeling that you are still learning, creating and contributing. The achievement.
As we grow older, purpose becomes just as important as care. Everyone deserves something that excites them, something that makes them curious about what tomorrow might bring, and something that reminds them they are still capable of wonderful things.
That is why the team at Gedling works so hard to make every day different. We are always searching for new ideas, new experiences and new opportunities to help residents laugh, reminisce, connect and discover hidden talents.

Living in a care home should never mean simply passing the time.
It should mean continuing to make memories, continuing to find joy in the everyday, and continuing to wake up each morning knowing there is something waiting for you.
Sometimes that something is a hat.
Sometimes it’s a Halloween ghost.
And sometimes it’s simply the comfort of sitting beside a friend, sharing stories and realising you’re never alone.
Those are the moments that turn a care home into a family, and care into something truly special.
