Painting Without Peeking: Gedling Residents Mark World Sight Day with a Colourful Challenge

Oct 11, 2026

Residents in the Orchid Suite at Gedling Care Home celebrated World Sight Day with a creative activity that was as educational as it was entertaining, proving that sometimes the best way to appreciate something is to imagine life without it.

Armed with paintbrushes, bright colours and plenty of good humour, residents took part in a unique painting challenge. Each person selected just one colour and, with their eyes closed, painted something onto a sheet of paper before passing it clockwise for the next resident to continue. Nobody quite knew where their paint was landing or what the finished picture would look like, which led to lots of laughter, surprises and friendly discussions as the artwork gradually took shape.

The finished paintings were a collection of wonderfully bright abstract masterpieces, full of unexpected patterns and splashes of colour. Residents then repeated the activity with their eyes open and quickly noticed the difference. The paintings became much more controlled and deliberate, creating the perfect opportunity to talk about just how much we rely on our eyesight every day.

While the activity was great fun, it also encouraged residents to think about the importance of looking after their eyes and maintaining their overall wellbeing. Conversations naturally developed around sight, independence and the practical steps people can take to care for their vision. These discussions are valuable because they help residents reflect on how their senses support everyday life, from reading and enjoying hobbies to recognising loved ones and moving around safely and confidently.

At Gedling Care Home, meaningful activities are about much more than keeping busy. Engaging residents physically, mentally and socially helps to stimulate curiosity, encourage conversation and promote ongoing learning. Activities such as this give residents the opportunity to share experiences, exchange ideas and think about subjects that affect their daily lives, all while enjoying time together.

Supporting independence is a key part of life at Gedling, and helping residents understand the value of caring for their health and sensory wellbeing can play an important role in maintaining confidence and independence for as long as possible. By exploring important topics in a fun, relaxed and interactive way, residents can continue making informed choices about their own wellbeing while enjoying activities that bring people together.

Most importantly, the day was filled with smiles, laughter and colourful creativity, with residents leaving not only with some eye-catching artwork, but also with a greater appreciation of the remarkable role sight plays in everyday life.
