The Heart Behind The Old Rectory Herald

Oct 12, 2026

At The Old Rectory Care Home, some of the most meaningful moments are not measured in grand gestures, but in the simple acts of kindness, friendship and dedication that bring people together. Every month, residents eagerly look forward to receiving The Old Rectory Herald, a newsletter lovingly created by volunteer Ann, whose commitment to the home has become a treasured part of life at The Old Rectory.

Ann began volunteering at The Old Rectory in 2018 after her mother moved into the home. Today, her mother is the home’s oldest resident at 100! What started as a way to support a loved one has grown into years of dedicated service to the wider Old Rectory family. Volunteering has been woven into Ann’s life since she was 16 years old, and her passion for helping others continues to shine through everything she does.

The newsletter itself is far more than a collection of updates. It captures birthdays, celebrations, special events, fundraising successes, activities and everyday moments that matter to residents. June’s edition featured Norman’s 80th birthday celebrations, complete with a special lunch, updates from a successful plant sale that raised £462, news of an electric wheelchair helping residents enjoy trips out for birthday treats at local cafés, and a look back at the activities enjoyed throughout the month.

What makes Ann’s contribution so inspiring is that it comes from a place of genuine connection. In a world increasingly filled with digital shortcuts, every page reflects time, care and a real understanding of the people who live at The Old Rectory. There is no artificial intelligence creating memories, no polished marketing campaign, and no edited perfection. Instead, there are real stories, real people and real moments that residents can recognise, talk about and treasure. Those are the things that make a community feel like home.

The newsletter is also a wonderful reminder of something that sits at the heart of life at The Old Rectory: care homes should never feel like closed doors. Families, friends, volunteers and residents all play an important role in creating a vibrant and connected community. It has never been about “us and them”. It is about everyone working together, sharing experiences, celebrating milestones and ensuring residents remain connected to the people and relationships that mean the most to them.

For many residents, seeing familiar faces, reading about recent events and reliving happy memories through the newsletter brings genuine enjoyment and conversation. It sparks recollections, celebrates achievements and helps everyone feel part of something bigger. Whether it is a birthday celebration, a successful fundraising event or simply photographs of friends enjoying time together, these moments reinforce the sense of belonging that makes The Old Rectory so special.

For Ann, volunteering has never simply been about giving up her time, it has been a way of life. Having spent decades helping others through Guiding, community groups and local initiatives, she continues to make a difference at The Old Rectory while also supporting her treasured mother, the home’s oldest resident. Ann’s dedication, compassion and community spirit are truly inspiring, demonstrating how acts of kindness, no matter how small, can create friendships, inspire others and bring joy to those around us. Her journey is a powerful example of the difference one caring person can make.

Everyone at The Old Rectory would like to thank Ann for the incredible dedication she continues to show. Her kindness, creativity and generosity of spirit, enrich the lives of residents every month, proving that one volunteer can make a remarkable difference. Through her work, she helps preserve memories, create smiles and remind us all of the extraordinary power of community.

Finally, to finish, a couple of wholesome examples of Ann’s wonderful work. No AI, no Photoshop, no filters. Just pure, wholesome content, demonstrating genuine community spirit, kindness and the simple joy of sharing real life together.
