The Human Side of Care: Sara Leigh’s Personal Challenge for Dementia UK

Oct 2, 2026

At Athorpe Lodge, every decision we make is guided by one simple question: what is best for our residents? Their safety, wellbeing and happiness sit at the heart of everything we do. Our team spends every day caring for others, supporting families through difficult times and helping residents live fulfilling and meaningful lives.

But behind every uniform, every care plan and every act of kindness is a person with a life of their own.

The people who dedicate themselves to caring for others are not immune to the realities of life. They experience the same heartbreak, worry, loss and uncertainty as everyone else. They navigate family challenges, face difficult diagnoses affecting loved ones and carry personal struggles that often remain unseen while they continue to show up each day with compassion and professionalism.

Today, we’d like to pause and recognise one of those people.

This September, Sara Leigh, Home Manager at Athorpe Lodge, completed a fundraising challenge that was far more than a personal achievement. Sara committed to walking a mile every day throughout the month to raise money for Dementia UK, ultimately raising an incredible £732 for the charity.

What made this challenge special was not solely the distance covered, but the personal story behind it. When every step is fuelled by love, gratitude and personal experience, it becomes something far more powerful.

The challenge was inspired by Sara’s mum, who is living with dementia. Like so many families across the country, Sara and her loved ones have experienced first-hand how devastating the condition can be, not only for the person diagnosed but also for those who love them.

Speaking about her motivation, Sara said:

The background to this challenge is personal, my Mum has Dementia and the impact that this has on everyone who cares and loves her is significant. Any support is appreciated from people who understand, care and want to help. My participation in this challenge was a very small way of saying thank you and that this important service continues.

Those words will resonate with anyone whose family has been touched by dementia.

There is a unique sadness in watching someone you love gradually lose parts of themselves. The memories shared over a lifetime, the conversations that once came so naturally, the familiar routines and treasured moments can begin to change. Families often find themselves grieving while still holding on, balancing hope with heartbreak and love with the pain of seeing a parent, partner or friend face a condition that nobody can stop.

Yet amid those difficult realities, there are organisations such as Dementia UK providing essential support, advice and guidance to families when they need it most.

For Sara, this challenge was her way of saying thank you.

Every mile walked throughout September represented not only a fundraising effort but also a personal tribute to her mum and a gesture of support for countless other families travelling a similar road. It was a reminder that even small actions, repeated with determination and purpose, can make a meaningful difference.

At Athorpe Lodge, we are incredibly proud of Sara. Not simply because she raised £732, but because she transformed something deeply personal into something positive. She used her own experience to help others, shining a light on dementia and the impact it has on families everywhere.

Care is often described as a profession, but for many people it is something much deeper. It is empathy shaped by experience. It is compassion born from understanding. It is knowing what it feels like to sit on both sides of the table, as both caregiver and loved one.

Sara’s story is a powerful reminder that while our team spends every day supporting residents and their families, they carry stories of their own. Stories of love, resilience, strength and loss. Stories that make them not only exceptional care professionals, but exceptional people too.

From everyone at Athorpe Lodge, thank you, Sara, for every mile, every pound raised and for sharing a part of your journey with us. We know your mum will be incredibly proud.
