There are some friendships that don’t need words, and at Hollybank Care Home, that was more than evident this week when some very familiar visitors returned.
Back in May, our residents were delighted to meet a group of tiny ducklings who waddled their way into everyone’s hearts. Small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, the fluffy youngsters brought smiles, laughter and plenty of conversation as residents watched them explore their surroundings and grow in confidence.
This month, those same ducklings made a heartwarming return visit, but this time they were fully grown ducks. Residents were amazed to see just how much they had changed. The ducks confidently waddled around the lounge, greeting residents as if they were old friends and bringing back memories of their first visit earlier in the year.
Joining them was a friendly rabbit, Mussels, whose gentle nature and soft fur provided comfort and companionship to residents as they enjoyed spending time together.
Animals have a unique way of connecting with people. They don’t judge, they don’t rush, and they communicate in ways that often go beyond words. For many residents, spending time with animals can bring back cherished memories of beloved family pets, childhood experiences and special moments from years gone by. For others, it simply brings a sense of calm, happiness and connection, which is shown by the smiles on their faces.
The bond between humans and animals is something truly special. A gentle nuzzle, a curious glance or the sight of a duck happily waddling across the room can spark joy, encourage conversation and remind us all of the simple pleasures that make life meaningful. The presence of animals can lift spirits, create shared experiences and help people feel connected, not only to the animals themselves but also to one another.
The visit was filled with smiles, laughter and wonderful interactions, proving once again the positive impact that animal therapy and animal visits can have on wellbeing.
A huge thank you goes to Jo and Millie from Life Between The Ears for bringing today’s wonderful visitors and for creating such a memorable experience for everyone at Hollybank. Seeing the ducks return as fully grown adults made the occasion even more special and reminded us just how quickly life changes, while the happiness they bring remains exactly the same.
